Where was The Banshees of Inisherin filmed?

The island of Inisherin is invented, but Martin McDonagh's 2022 film found it in two very real corners of Ireland's west coast. He shot across Achill Island in County Mayo and the Aran island of Inishmore in County Galway, letting the raw light and weather of the Wild Atlantic Way carry the film's melancholy mood.

On Achill, the golden horseshoe of Keem Bay, cradled by steep green cliffs, is where one friend's cottage stood and where the story finally closes. The village pub, JJ Devine's, was a temporary build near Cloughmore on the island's southeastern corner. Across on Inishmore, the cottage shared by the brother and sister was raised in the tiny settlement of Gort na gCapall, below the great clifftop fort of Dun Aonghasa.

Achill is the easy one, joined to the mainland by a bridge and reached by road from Westport, so a couple of days there covers Keem and Cloughmore. Inishmore is a ferry from Rossaveel near Galway or from Doolin in County Clare, best explored by bike. Come between spring and autumn and pack for Atlantic weather that can turn on a whim.
