Filming Skyfall: locations and how to visit

This entry in the long-running spy series is also one of its most beautiful to chase across the map, because it swings from a sun-baked Mediterranean city to the cold, brooding heart of the Scottish Highlands. For set-jetters it offers two completely different moods in one film, and both are rooted in places you can genuinely visit.

It opens with a breathless chase that tears across the rooftops and through the covered lanes of Istanbul's Grand Bazaar, the sprawling Turkish market that has been a labyrinth of stalls for centuries. Later the story retreats to the Scottish Highlands, where the agent drives his Aston Martin along the winding single-track road into Glen Etive, a remote, mist-wrapped glen whose dark hills and silent river give the film its sombre, homecoming heart.

The two halves suggest two trips. Istanbul rewards a few days of bazaars, mosques and ferries across the Bosphorus, while Glen Etive is best folded into a Highlands road trip near Glencoe, with a hire car and time to pull over for the views. Drive slowly, respect the narrow road and the working land around it, and let Scotland's weather set the scene.
