Where was House of the Dragon filmed?
Two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, the Targaryen dynasty tears itself apart over succession and dragons. Its King's Landing was built largely from the untouched medieval centres of western Spain, where conquistador palaces and town walls needed almost no set dressing.

Filming House of the Dragon: locations and how to visit
Returning to the same continent generations earlier, this dynastic fantasy carries all the spectacle that made its parent series a travel touchstone, and the same instinct for shooting in real, untouched places. For set-jetters it offers a tighter, more focused trip than the original sprawl, concentrated in a corner of Spain where the Middle Ages never quite ended.
The capital of this world was built largely from the medieval heart of Extremadura, in western Spain. The untouched old town of Cáceres, all towers, palaces and stone lanes, doubled as the streets of the royal capital with barely any set dressing needed, its preserved quarter doing the work a backlot usually would. Nearby, the Moorish hilltop castle of Trujillo and the grand Plaza Mayor spread out below it appear as parts of the dynasty's capital and its surroundings.
Both towns sit in Extremadura, an inland region often overlooked by visitors, which makes this a refreshingly uncrowded pilgrimage. Cáceres and Trujillo are close enough to see together on a short road trip or as day trips from a regional base, and both reward simply wandering their old quarters on foot. Pair them with the wider history of the area for a trip that satisfies long after the credits roll.
