Where was Mamma Mia! filmed?

Sun, sea and pure escapism made this jukebox musical a holiday in itself, and ever since, viewers have wanted to step straight into the screen. The fictional Greek island at its heart drew so heavily on one real place that the film became a love letter to the Aegean, the kind of postcard that leaves you scrolling for flights before the credits finish.

That real place is Skopelos, in Greece, where the film found its two most photographed spots. The tiny Agios Ioannis Kastri chapel, perched high on a sea stack and reached by a long flight of rock-cut steps, is where the clifftop wedding scene was shot. Down on the island's west coast, the pine-backed pebble cove of Kastani Beach is where several of the beach musical numbers came to life, framed by the deep green of the trees and the blue of the sea.

Skopelos sits in the Sporades and is reached by ferry, often via neighbouring Skiathos, so build in a little island-hopping time. The chapel climb is steep and exposed, so wear proper shoes and go early in the day, while Kastani Beach makes an easy, lovely afternoon. Pair the two with a slow few days enjoying the island itself rather than rushing the locations.
