Ridley Scott's 2021 drama about the fashion dynasty and the scandal that engulfed it was shot entirely in Italy, moving between Milan, Lake Como and Rome. The film turns real palazzi, churches and lakeside villas into the backdrop for the Gucci family's glittering rise and fall.
On Lake Como, the seventeenth-century Villa Balbiano at Ossuccio stands in as the Gucci family home, one of the grandest houses on the lake. In Milan, the refined 1930s Villa Necchi Campiglio, now a house museum open to the public, plays the home of the elder Gucci. The wedding is set in the Baroque church of Santa Maria in Campitelli, near Rome's old Jewish quarter.
Milan makes a practical base: Villa Necchi is open to visit near the fashion quarter, and Lake Como is under an hour away by train, with Villa Balbiano best admired from a boat along the western shore. Rome is a separate leg, easily reached by high-speed rail. Spring and autumn are the kindest seasons for the lake and the cities alike.
