The Pacific Northwest runway and coastline sequences were flown out of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, with the green bluffs and water of the Coupeville area standing in for the film's northern airfield.
How to visit
The base is not open to the public, but the historic seafront town of Coupeville on Penn Cove is one of the prettiest stops in Puget Sound. Reach Whidbey by ferry from Mukilteo or over the Deception Pass bridge, and time a visit for the island's famous mussels.
