Jurassic Park

Visiting Oahu: a set-jetting guide

Oahu is where a single green valley became one of cinema's most reused landscapes, and where set-jetting comes with a steering wheel and an open sky. The towering, jungle-clad amphitheatre of Kualoa Ranch is where the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park first roam free, the grassy expanse you watch the cameras sweep across before the herd appears. Countless productions have borrowed it since, but it is the original lost-world wonder that pulls people up the windward coast.

What makes it special is that the valley is genuinely walkable, or rather driveable, by tour. The ranch runs ticketed movie-location trips by bus, ATV and on horseback, weaving past the exact spots the films used, with guides who point them out. Book ahead, because the valley sits on private land and you cannot simply wander in.

Treat the journey as half the pleasure. Kualoa is about an hour's drive from Waikiki, looping around the windward side of the island, and the coast road itself is reason enough to set out early. Sheer green ridges fall to the sea the whole way, so build in time to stop.

Base yourself in Waikiki for the beaches, the food and the easy logistics, then make Kualoa a half-day excursion with a relaxed drive at either end. Aim for a morning tour when the light is kind to the ridgelines and the heat is still gentle, and leave the afternoon for the shoreline back toward town.
