Visiting Lombardy: a set-jetting guide
Call Me by Your Name made an unhurried northern-Italian summer feel like a place you could move into, and that place is real. Luca Guadagnino's 2017 romance unfolds across the town of Crema and the lush Lombardy plain around it, a landscape of bicycles, dust roads and long, slow afternoons.
The town's gravitational centre is the Piazza del Duomo in Crema. The cathedral square and the arcaded streets running off it are the languid backdrop to the lovers' wanderings, and the piazza is still a free, lively space ringed by cafés. Wander the surrounding lanes and you start to recognise the film's shopfronts and fountains.
For the film's water and heat, head north into the mountains. The river pools and tiers of the Cascate del Serio, one of Europe's tallest waterfalls, are where the pair swim and lounge away the summer. The river and its trails are walkable year-round, but the full cascade only thunders on a handful of scheduled release days, so check the dates if you want the spectacle.
The two halves of the trip pair neatly. Crema is an easy train or drive from Milan, with the city itself under an hour away, while the Serio valley is a couple of hours further up into the Orobie Alps. Base yourself in Crema for the slow, lived-in side of the film and treat the falls as a day in the hills.
One last tip in the spirit of the film. The pasticcerie around the Crema square are made for exactly the kind of long, idle afternoon Call Me by Your Name romanticises, so order something sweet and let the day drift.
