Schindler's List

Visiting Kraków: a set-jetting guide

Visiting Kraków: a set-jetting guide. Poland's old royal capital escaped the war almost untouched, which is exactly why Steven Spielberg brought Schindler's List (1993) here to film the true story of Oskar Schindler. The result is one of the most sobering set-jetting trips in Europe, and one where the line between film set and history all but disappears.

The heart of it is Schindler's Factory in the Zabłocie district, across the river from the old town. Schindler's real enamel works now houses a powerful museum of wartime Kraków, and it is the obvious place to begin. Book ahead, because timed tickets sell out, and allow a couple of sober hours to take it in properly.

From there, cross back to Kazimierz, the city's historic Jewish quarter, which stood in for wartime Kraków throughout the film. Its old synagogues, memorials and quiet squares are free to wander, and today they sit alongside some of the city's best cafés and bars, a juxtaposition that says a lot about how Kazimierz has come back to life.

The two are close enough to link on foot or with a short tram ride, and both lie just beyond the medieval core. That makes Kraków easy to plan: a heavier morning at the factory, an afternoon walking Kazimierz, and the spectacular Main Market Square waiting whenever you want to return to the present.

Stay in or near the old town for walkable access to all of it. Treat the day with the weight it deserves, then let the city's cafés and the great square remind you why Kraków is also one of Europe's most beautiful places to simply be.
